How to connect Claude to your tasks with the MCP server
Updated 22 September 2026 for version 3.1.1
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a way to give an AI assistant access to your data. The TODOčko server runs on your own machine and exposes 152 tools: it can create and change tasks, read projects, log time or go through comments.
In practice it means that instead of clicking you write "create a task to fix the login, high priority" or "what is left for me this week". The server runs locally, so the data travels between your computer and the assistant rather than through us.
Before you start: what that phrase actually is
The backup phrase is not a password you can change. It is the private key to all of your data. Anyone who has it can decrypt every task, project and comment you own, and there is nothing we can do about it, because we hold no copy of the key.
So put it only in the configuration file on your own machine. Never pass it on a command line, where the shell history and the process list both capture it, and never send it in a chat or upload it anywhere.
The server runs locally and talks to the assistant directly. Your data does not pass through our servers in this setup either.
What you will need
- Node.js 24.20 or newer. This is not a formality: the database layer builds on interfaces that Node has had natively only since version 24.
- A TODOčko account and your 24-word backup phrase.
- Claude Desktop or Claude Code. This guide covers both.
Steps
-
Download the server
Clone the repository, or download the ZIP from the releases page and unpack it.
git clone https://github.com/brnt-cz/todocko-mcp.git cd todocko-mcp -
Run the installer
The installer installs the dependencies, builds the project and asks whether you want to configure Claude Desktop, Claude Code or both. On Windows use the PowerShell script.
Linux / macOS
chmod +x install.sh ./install.shWindows (PowerShell)
.\install.ps1 -
Fill in your backup phrase
The installer writes a configuration file with a placeholder where the phrase belongs. Open it and replace the placeholder with your 24-word phrase. Without it the server has nothing to decrypt the data with.
{ "mcpServers": { "todocko": { "command": "node", "args": ["/cesta/k/todocko-mcp/dist/index.js"], "env": { "TODOCKO_MNEMONIC": "sem patří vaše 24slovná fráze" } } } } -
Restart Claude
The configuration is read at startup, so the change only takes effect once the application restarts.
-
Check that it works
Ask the assistant what projects you have. If it answers with the list from your TODOčko, you are done.
Manual installation
If you would rather not run the installer, install the dependencies, build the project and add the server to the configuration by hand.
npm install
npm run build Claude Desktop looks for its configuration in the application settings directory on Linux and in the application support library on macOS. Claude Code reads its settings from its configuration file in your home directory.
What it is good for
A few things that have worked well in practice:
- Create a task from a description without switching windows.
- Ask what is overdue, or what is left before the end of the sprint.
- Have a summary of the week written from the worklogs.
- Turn meeting notes into several tasks at once.
- Link tasks together once it turns out one blocks another.
When it does not start
- The server refuses to start and complains about a mnemonic mismatch. The database holds another account's data, encrypted with a key the current one does not have. Delete the local database in your home directory and let it download the data again.
- The assistant does not see the server. Check that the path in the configuration points at the built file rather than the source, and that you restarted Claude after editing it.
- A second instance refuses to run. That is deliberate. Two instances over one database take the lock from each other, so the second one stops rather than breaking the first.
